Attack on Titan is a genuine masterpiece
Attack On Titan is pretty unique because the author stated that he wrote the ending first and then wrote backwards. In the same way Evangelion isn't about mech fighting, AOT isn't about giant monsters. But unlike AOT, Evangelion is 20ish episodes of consistent and then massive changes, AOT has much smaller but snowballing changes throughout the entire show. Eva has giant genre shifting plot changes, AOT has dozens of smaller little plot wrinkles that eventually shifts the story in a very different direction. Similar results but very different approaches.
I say all this to say that I'd probably never call AOT one of the greatest pieces of media ever made or anything, but it is definitely worth respecting for how it handles change over time. Season four is about analyzing class structures within ethno-states and the interconnectedness of isolationism and nationalism. Season one is about giant scary monsters that eat people and also that potatoes are cool.
